It's no surprise that Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage never lasted. Their rocky relationship was riddled with controversy and scandal. According to a royal author Penny Junor, Charles' internal conflict began even before his wedding to Diana, The Sun reports. The Prince of Wales always had his heart set out another woman, Camilla Parker Bowles, who ended up being his wife. The two were initially introduced by mutual friend Lucia Santa Cruz and quickly became close friends talking for hours on the phone. But Camilla was dating Andrew Parker Bowles who eventually proposed to Camilla in 1973. Charles' love for Camilla never progressed, especially when his great-uncle Lord Mountbatten said that she was not sufficiently aristocratic and implied that she was "not a virgin".
Charles was in West Indies when Camilla accepted the proposal. He reportedly wrote to her that it was cruel "such a blissful, peaceful and mutually happy relationship" should last just six months and even begged Camilla not to go through with the marriage. However, The Daily Mail reports that according to the author, she adored Andrew "and she had been dating him through thick and thin for seven years. She wanted to be Mrs. Parker Bowles, wife of her handsome cavalry officer, not Princess of Wales, not Queen." But all wasn't well. The author claimed that Andrew was seeing multiple women and that "to most outsiders, the Parker Bowles seemed to be a fortunate and very happy family. But appearances were deceiving."
Soon Charles had to confront his own commitment in marrying Princess Diana. Penny Junor said Charles wept the night before marrying Diana. Devastated by his broken dreams of marrying Camilla Parker Bowles, the prince stood by the Buckingham Palace window and cried as he saw the crowds outside waiting for their extravagant royal wedding.Princess Diana herself claimed her wedding day on 29 July 1981, was the worst day of her life. Both their reasons: Camilla.
After their wedding, Princess Diana suspected something was wrong. She knew there was something brewing between her partner and Camilla Parker Bowles. Camilla had gifted the Prince a pair of cufflinks with two C’s entwined and Diana confronted him about it during their honeymoon. This left Diana in fury. “So I said, 'Camilla gave you those, didn't she?' He said, 'Yes, so what's wrong? They're a present from a friend.' And, boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy,” she said. “And it was such a good idea, the two C's. But it wasn't that clever." It seems the Princess had doubts even on their wedding day. According to the Netflix documentary The Story of Diana, the Express reports that Diana said, “As I walked up the aisle I was looking for her.” She was speaking about Camilla who is now the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Sun goes on to report that the book claimed that Charles caused his marriage to deteriorate by not telling Diana about Camilla and that he only saw the princess’ “dark side” after their engagement. The book also alleges Diana ripped up Charles’ paintings on their honeymoon and subjected a courtier to a six-hour ordeal by crying, kicking furniture and ranting. Perhaps Charles could have saved everyone some trouble and not got married at all if he still harboured feelings for Camilla. Or perhaps the pressure of the monarchy was too much and he felt like he was left with no choice. In the end, however, he did marry Camilla, now 69 years old. She married him in 2005 eight years after Diana’s 1997 death. Quite a complicated love story.
